The message of the book is ultimately a pro-moral one, which exposes the hollowness and futility of hedonism and points the reader to different goals. Wilde was not a Christian when he wrote the Dorian Gray book (he converted to Catholicism near the end of his life), but he was spiritually searching, and sympathetic to Christian teaching even though he didn't personally practice it.
